MUMBAI: Rahul Dravid will now have to apply for a role that was specifically created for Rahul Dravid after Rahul Dravid showed the Indian cricket administration that there needs to be greater emphasis on coaching at the junior level.
The BCCI has brought out an advertisement for potential candidates to apply for the role of ‘Head of Cricket’ at its National Cricket Academy (NCA), a role that currently belongs to Dravid. It is in line with the policy laid out by the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (COA) that once the contracted term of a ‘professional’ is over, a new hiring process will have to begin, even to retain the services of the same individual.
Which means, for Dravid to continue in his role, he has to reapply. “And what sense does that make? You have the services of a legendary excricketer who’s done phenomenally well at junior cricket. Why won’t you just retain him automatically? Those regulations were so archaic,” say those tracking developments. This advertisement suggests only three possibilities: a) Dravid doesn’t want to continue at NCA because he wants to take over as India coach, b) He needs a break from all coaching or a full-time role, or c) He wants to go back to coaching at the IPL or take up some other assignment and quit the NCA.
“Because if he wants to continue, then the BCCI should just let him. Can you think about anyone in India’s coaching circuit right now, who can fill in for Rahul? Then what’s the purpose of this interview? Unless of course, you want to renegotiate his (Dravid’s) salary,” sources add.
TOI also understands that the basic purpose of BCCI bringing out this advertisement for ‘Head of Cricket’ at the NCA is to hire Dravid back at a lesser salary. “I think there’s this line of thought that it’s mainly administrative work, so it can’t be to the tune of what he’s being currently paid,” say those in the know.
