Boys Over Flowers, which is the popular shoujo romance manga series by Yoko Kamio, has made history. It has earned itself a Guinness World Record for having the most published copies of a shoujo manga written by a single author. The series sold over 59 million copies as of November 2022, earning itself the honour.
Shueisha made the announcement on Thursday that Boys Over Flowers has been officially certified by Guinness World Records.
“I am extremely happy that Boys Over Flowers was able to register with the Guinness World Records in the milestone year of its 30th anniversary,” Kamio said. “I believe that this record is thanks to the support of so many readers. Thank you very much.”
Boys Over Flowers is best known for its Korean drama adaptation starring Lee Min-ho. It has been adapted into live-action series in many countries around the world, but the series has enjoyed success particularly in Asia.
Even though the manga series ended in 2003, Boys Over Flowers has still remained popular after all these years. Kamio revived the series with Boys Over Flowers Season 2, which started its run in February 2015 and ended in December 2019. The sequel consisted of 15 volumes.
Boys Over Flowers is about Tsukushi Makino, a teenager born into a middle-class family who deals with life, love, and new classmates after being accepted into the prestigious Eitoku academy.
