Brawl Stars: Candid Chat With Revenant Esports Team Captain About the Progress So Far and the Future

Editor’s Note: Revenant Esports provided IGN India access to Ashmit “Sergeant Clash” Singh for this interview.

The Brawl Stars team of Revenant Esports is a relatively new on the national and global esports stage. It was established in January 2023 but has been dominating the Brawl Stars esports scene in India since its inception. The Brawl Stars roster consists of Ashmit “Sergeant Clash” Singh (captain), Prashant “Trashant” Malik, Moida Shashank “Instinct” Jain, and Shaurya “Hero” Shukla.

The team won the Brawl Stars Championship 2023: February India Monthly Finals and dominated the Snapdragon Pro Series – India Challengers. However, the team could not make the same kind of mark in the competition as it exited the Snapdragon Pro Series Masters.

We spoke with Revenant Esports’ Brawl Stars team’s Ashmit “Sergeant Clash” Singh, the captain of the team. During the conversation, we discussed the progress so far, the disappointment from Snapdragon Pro Series Masters and the future for the team in 2023. Check out our full conversation with Ashmit below:

Revenant Esports’ Brawl Stars team was announced in January 2023, and just a month later, it went on to win the Brawl Stars Championship 2023: February India Monthly Finals. How did the team find the right synergy between the team in this limited period, that too for a comparatively new esports title in India?

“The team has some of the most individually skilled mechanical players in India. Our dedication and hard work really paid off for the first month as we worked hard continuously day in and out for the first monthly finals. It is nothing but the reward of our hard work.”

The team also dominated proceedings at the Snapdragon Pro Series – India Challengers. Coming back from that performance, what went wrong for the team at Snapdragon Pro Series Masters?

“The team had limited time to practice on the new devices provided at the venue due to various issues such as last-minute visa approval along with it being the team’s first LAN. Despite it being the first LAN, I would say the team exceeded expectations.”

What were some of the key challenges faced by the team at the Snapdragon Pro Series Masters? How different was the tournament from previous competitions?

“The Snapdragon Pro Series Masters was the first LAN event for us which was the main challenge as we really didn’t know what to expect. This was the first time we faced international teams on a fair level. Previous competitions were generally regional competitions and the Brawlers draft between regions differs a lot. So, the time gap was a definite issue.”

What are some areas the team will be looking at to improve before their next tournament? Will there be an overhaul in the approach or some minor tweaks?

“We will be looking on improving team synergy and working towards a more aggressive playstyle for the BSC season. We will rework the way we approach the game analytically and make changes according to the teams at LCQ rather than the meta of our own region.”

As the captain of the team and coming on the back of great performances last year, winning the most MVP awards in SESA and ANZ region, are there any positives you’ve identified in the team’s performance despite the early exit from the tournament?

“The team performed exceptionally well especially considering it was our first LAN. We made a ton of mistakes at the LAN, but I believe that over time there will be nothing but improvement. The team has a surreal amount of motivation and dedication after this LAN for the LCQ towards the end of the year. The main positive aspect will definitely be our will to grind.”

Revenant Esports and Marcos Gaming represented India at the tournament and were on the back of a good run before the eventual early exit. Reply Totem, a team that has been around since 2020, has gone on to lift the Snapdragon Pro Series Masters trophy while remaining undefeated throughout the tournament.

Does the team believe that a lack of an established esports scene here in India for Brawl Stars has contributed to the early exit since this is one of the few major international Brawl Stars tournaments that Indian teams have taken part in?

“Brawl Stars definitely lacks a presence in the Indian community while on the other hand it is one of the biggest mobile games in Europe. This in turn has led us to various hurdles such as unable to find regular scrims or unable to have different opponents to scrim with. This definitely gives the other regions an edge over us, and we believe if the scene grows in India, we will be able to improve our international performance.”

What’s next for Revenant Esports after Snapdragon Pro Series Masters?

“We will be looking internally and analyzing stuff we can change. We will now be targeting the LCQ and ultimately Worlds, since statistically we are almost already qualified for LCQ. We will be revamping our playstyle and will start preparation for LCQ alongside the monthly finals.”

How has the fan and community support been for the team? What aspect would you like to share with us?

“The Indian community is considered as one of the friendliest and down to earth communities in the Brawl Stars scene. No matter our results, they have always kept us up and we haven’t received any negative feedback even after our loss at Masters. They are really supportive and support us no matter the outcome.”

As mentioned by RNT’s captain, the team will now be setting their sights at The Brawl Stars World Finals 2023 and qualify for it through the Monthly Finals. The June Monthly Qualifiers will commence on June 10, 2023. The monthly finals will take place till August and eventually lead to the The Brawl Stars World Finals 2023 where teams from different regions will go against each other.
