Brazil has seized hundreds of iPhones, here’s why – Times of India

It has been two years since Apple has stopped shipping chargers with the new iPhones. Apple only gives a charging cable and — for environmental reasons — doesn’t give a charger. Earlier this year in September, Brazil had ordered a suspension of all iPhone sales in the country and fined Apple as well. “Application of a fine in the amount of BRL 12,274,500, cancellation of registration of iPhone brand smartphones introduced on the market from the iPhone 12 model, and immediate suspension of supply of all iPhone-branded smartphones, regardless of model or generation unaccompanied by the power brick,” noted the Justice Ministry of Brazil. The sale of iPhones eventually resumed but now Apple has another problem in Brazil.
Why did Brazil seize iPhones?
According to a report by Tecnoblog, “hundreds of iPhones” were seized in Brazil’s capital city Brasilia. The report mentions that the iPhones were seized from authorised Apple resellers and carrier stores. The reason remains the same: no chargers with iPhones. The actions as termed “Operation Discharge” and the move was to force Apple to ship iPhones with chargers.
What happened after the phones were seized?
Apple filed a writ of mandamus which ensures that iPhones will be sold in Brazil. However, in a statement to Tecnoblog, Apple did mention that the seizure of iPhones wasn’t illegal but asked the court to allow sale of iPhones till the legal dispute is settled.
According to a report by Macmagazine, a judge made it clear that Apple will be allowed to sell iPhones in Brazil till a final judgement is. Made. The judge, as per the report, also said that Apple is not in violation of any consumer rights. In fact, the judge said that Brazilian regulator was abusing its power. Apple, on its part, has maintained that its customers know of the various options for charging and connecting their devices and that it will win the legal dispute.
