Brendan Fraser Reveals Why He Thinks Tom Cruise’s Mummy Movie, Bombed, Open to a Fourth Movie

It’s been 14 years since Brendan Fraser last played Rick O’Connell in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon, but the actor is open to reprising the role, and he also has some thoughts on why the 2017 series reboot starring Tom Cruise failed to take off.

In an interview with Variety, Fraser admits he doesn’t know what form a fourth Mummy film would take, but would like to revisit his starring role if the premise felt right.

“I don’t know how it would work,” he told Variety. “But I’d be open to it if someone came up with the right conceit.”

Tom Cruise headlined a reboot of the Mummy franchise in 2017. The film was meant to act as as springboard for a shared movie universe at Universal called the “Dark Universe,” but was poorly received to the point where Director Alex Kurtzman went as far to call it the “biggest failure” of his life. Fraser has his own opinion on the movie, and told Variety he thinks it didn’t take off because it wasn’t as “fun” as the original trilogy, and leaned into a more serious tone.

“It is hard to make that movie,” Fraser said. “The ingredient that we had going for our Mummy, which I didn’t see in that film, was fun. That was what was lacking in that incarnation. It was too much of a straight-ahead horror movie. ‘The Mummy’ should be a thrill ride, but not terrifying and scary.”

Fraser recently did work on the canceled Batgirl adaptation playing the villain Firefly, and said the film’s cancellation was “tragic.” This was one of many casualties following shifts over at Warner Bros. Discovery after its recent merger.
