British Grand Prix LIVE: Lewis Hamilton starts second with Max Verstappen on pole
Lewis Hamilton will start the British Grand Prix from second place after Max Verstappen won Saturday’s sprint race at Silverstone. Red Bull looked much quicker yesterday are worried they will not be able to close the gap when the lights go out.
“Naturally it hasn’t been the best day for us but we’ve been giving it absolutely everything,” said Hamilton.
“Tomorrow’s going to be tough but just the support of the fans, even the parade lap, the roar of the crowd is just magnificent. I’ll recharge tonight, come back stronger tomorrow.
“There’s definitely things that we’ve learnt from today and I hope that we can improve for tomorrow.
“I’ll be giving it everything for everyone who turns up tomorrow and I hope we can have a closer race than we had today.”
2.30pm: Red Bull boss Christian Horner says that it will be a ‘fascinating’ race between Verstappen and Hamilton this afternoon.
“There is nothing to choose between the two cars. The difference yesterday was the start – and I think that will be a key part of the race today,” Horner told Sky Sports.
“[Mercedes] are fast on the straights and we have been quicker in the corners. Strategy, especially in this heat, is also going to play a crucial role.
“It’s going to be a fascinating Grand Prix.”
2.20pm: Despite Hamilton starting yesterday’s sprint race at the front of the grid, he was not able to overcome a slow start and stop Max Verstappen from winning the inaugural sprint race. A rapid start from the 23-year-old was enough to secure him pole position for the main race today. Read more from yesterday’s race, here.
2.10pm: Lewis Hamilton, who starts second on the grid, says that he couldn’t be anywhere better than at Silverstone today.
“When we didn’t get to experience this last year, it just shows you how special this is,” he told Sky Sports.
“There is nowhere else in the world that has fans like this. I’m so grateful to be a part of it all: the British flags and the energy.
“Seeing all these people, it’s like it has lit even more of a fire in terms of the sport. What a beautiful day we have here in the UK – perfect for the crowd. There is no place in the world I would rather be right now.
“I have to believe I can win, believe for all the many people here. It’s a tall order, it’s going to be tough – but I’m going to give it absolutely everything.”
2pm: Good afternoon and welcome to Express Sport’s coverage of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.
Around 140,000 fans will attend today’s race, which is the most spectators at an event in the UK since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
They will be hoping to see home favourite Hamilton claw back some of the 33-point deficit to Verstappen in the Drivers’ Championship.
But the Brit will be fighting from second on the grid after he struggled to match Red Bull’s pace during Saturday’s sprint race.
