Burglars beware! Amazon’s new £49 doorbell keeps watch 24 hours a day

Video doorbells aren’t anything new but Amazon is trying to shake up this popular market with the release of a much more affordable option. The online retailer has just announced its new Blink Video Doorbell which can be screwed to the front of your home for just £49.99 – that’s ridiculously cheap. As an example of just how good value that is, Google’s Nest brand recently released its new battery-powered doorbell with a price of over £170.

Just like its rivals, the Blink can monitor the front of your home and send instant alerts to your smartphone when it spots something or anyone. It features 1080p HD video recording for pin-sharp playback and there’s even infrared night vision for when the sun goes down.

If someone rings the bell, and you’re not home, an in-built speaker allows you to chat with the person outside your door no matter where you are on the planet.

To make installation easy, the Blink doorbell is also powered by two AA lithium batteries with Amazon promising up to two years of usage before they need to be replaced.

Finally, the firm is making it easy to store the footage the camera captures with users able to save things straight to an optional Blink Subscription plan, or save locally with no recurring fees with a Blink Sync Module and USB flash drive.

It will be launching soon in two colours and should be able to survive the British weather thanks to a water-resistant design.

“The new Blink Video Doorbell provides affordable, easy-to-use, reliable security at your front door, and is the perfect first step for customers looking to build out a smart home security system,” said Mike Harris, Chief Operating Officer, Blink. “Blink Video Doorbell is designed for every home – it comes packed with helpful smart security features like customized motion detection zones to monitor the areas that matter most to you and your family. With the addition of a video doorbell to Blink’s smart security camera line up – including the new Blink Floodlight Camera – you can see who’s at your door, keep an eye out for packages, and protect your whole home no matter where you are.”

The Blink Doorbell isn’t the device that Amazon has announced. The firm is also releasing a new smart thermostat that can control the heating simply by speaking to Alexa. It also features something called Hunches which can guess when you’re out or have gone to bed with the heating then turned down to save money.

Along with this new thermostat, Amazon has also launched a new Echo called the Show 15.

This device snaps to your wall and features a 15.6-inch, 1080p Full HD display for an easy way to see the weekly diary, check the weather or even watch TV.

It’s powered by Amazon’s new AZ2 Neural Edge processor and also includes a redesigned home screen with more customization options, new personalisation features with visual ID, and all-new Alexa experiences.

Finally, the firm is hoping to bring robots into homes with the launch of its Alexa-powered Astro. This little screen on wheels will follow you around the house, help make video calls and even act as a digital guard dog beaming footage of what’s going on in your home straight to a smartphone.
