Call Of Duty Is Bringing Back An Older Map Soon, What Do You Hope It Is?

Infinity Ward has teased that an “older” map from Call of Duty’s history is coming to Modern Warfare II. Multiplayer design director Geoff Smith talked to Dexerto about this recently, saying Call of Duty League testers tried it out and it’s now nearly ready for release.

“We’re bringing an older one back that some [Call of Duty League] guys, they really liked when they were at our office. We pivoted around and that’s coming pretty soon,” Smith said.

Some have criticized the Call of Duty franchise, and others in the multiplayer space, for bringing back old maps instead of only creating new ones, but Smith doesn’t see it that way.

“To be honest, there’s good, fun gameplay there. It’s kind of silly to not… lean into the strengths of those maps. Kind of a broken record but it’s also this balance between brand-new stuff and something that’s familiar.”

Smith went on to say that when Infinity Ward makes brand-new maps, people often tell the studio that they liked the old ones better anyway.

“It feels almost like it takes some time to get used to something new. Then suddenly two years later they’re like, ‘Oh man, Hackney Yard was a great map,’ but during the launch of it you’re like ‘That was a piece of crap.’ You build those memories with your friends and eventually, you have these rose-tinted glasses of these maps.”

Infinity Ward already brought back the maps Shoothouse and Shipment for Modern Warfare II, albeit with a number of updates and changes. Smith said the general idea for Modern Warfare II is to ensure that Infinity Ward is making new content and “not just a bunch of remastered maps.”

There is no word on what the classic map will be or when it’ll be released, but keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

The Call of Duty series will continue with a new release this year, and it’s rumored to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Looking further out, Activision’s Treyarch studio will reportedly take the reins and lead development on a new Call of Duty game for 2024. Supposed concept art leaked in 2022.
