Can deploy 4G for BSNL in 3-4 months: Nokia – Times of India
NEW DELHI: Finnish telecom infrastructure major Nokia has thrown its hat into BSNL’s Rs 17,000-crore-plus network modernisation project, saying it can set up 4G services for the state-owned company in a record period of 3-4 months using equipment made at its factory in Chennai.
“We are ready to carry out the 4G project for BSNL, and we can make the network ready in just 3-4 months in areas where our equipment is already being used,” Nokia’s India business head Sanjay Malik told TOI.
The company had set up BSNL’s network in west and south India, and is confidentthat the upgradation can be achieved in a record time. Asked whether Nokia can also set up the network in northern and eastern India, he said, “It can also be done, but we will need more time. ”
Malik said Nokia has been growing its manufacturing in India, and makes 5G equipment export markets too. “We have been making 5G equipment in India since two years, and this is then exported to markets all across the globe, including the US and Europe. India is now part of the global supply chain of Nokia, and we are now in the process of ramping up capacities to factor in additional demand that will be generated within India. ”
BSNL’s modernisationproject has been pending over the last nearly three years, with the top contender being the consortium between Tata’s TCS-Tejas combine and state-owned C-DOT (which will provide the core). While testing of the TCSled consortium has been going on for around a year now, there have been mixed results so far, leading to delays.
Sources said while TCSTejas and C-DOT combine still remains a front-runner for executing the project, the difference in prices quoted by the Tata group against BSNL’s internal estimates seems to have prompted the latter to consider fresh options, including approaching Reliance Jio.
