Captain America 4 recently got its title changed from New World Order to Brave New World. The news was first announced earlier in June via an Instagram post by lead star Anthony Mackie, who has now taken up the mantle of Captain America. Since then, Mackie has broken his silence for the first time on the title change, in a recent interview.
Anthony Mackie on Captain America 4 Title Change
In an interview with Inverse, Mackie was asked about the title change. However, he claims to have no idea about the reason behind MCU’s decision of changing Captain America: New World Order to Captain America: Brave New World. Here’s what Mackie said,
“I have no idea. They were like, ‘We’re changing the title.’ I was like, ‘All right, let’s do it.’ So that was it.”
Marvel still has not shared any reason behind the change. However, it is being speculated that the objections from fans regarding the title shortly after its reveal at the SDCC 2022, could have had something to do with it. Fans were linking the title to a real-world conspiracy theory about an antisemitic group.
Mackie Talks About Lack of Roles for Young Black Talent in Hollywood
Alongside playing the new Captain America, Anthony Mackie is also gearing up for his directorial debut with upcoming biopic Spark. It is based on the story of Claudette Colvin, one of the pioneers of the American Civil Rights movement. Spark will be highlighting her story of standing against bus desegregation at the age of 15. Additionally, it will also include Rosa Parks and the role she played in Colvin’s case in the Supreme Court, followed by her own protest against bus desegregation.
Speaking about the lack of diversity in certain products of pop culture, which produces lesser roles for Black talent, Mackie took a dig at the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings franchises.
“Harry Potter had no f*cking Black friends. Frodo walked across the entire universe and never met a Black dude. I want to see Frodo in the hood, which if I ever do Saturday Night Live is going to be a skit I’m going to do.”
Spark was announced back in January 2022. However, it has been delayed multiple times, reportedly due to various reasons like setbacks from Covid 19, and eventually the Writers’ Strike. Captain America: Brave New World is currently slated to release on July 26, 2024, in theatres worldwide.
