Carlos Alcaraz divides tennis fans ahead of Barcelona injury comeback

Carlos Alcaraz has split opinion following his latest injury setback. The world No 2 was forced to pull out of Monte Carlo after hurting his hand and spine during the sunshine swing. He is already set to make his comeback in Barcelona next week but Express Sport readers are divided over the severity of his recent injury woes.

As well as his latest setback after the Miami Open, Alcaraz tore his abdomen at the Paris Masters last year and missed the ATP Finals. A leg injury then prevented him from playing the Australian Open and the issue returned during his Rio Open final defeat, forcing him to miss Acapulco.

The 19-year-old has proven that he can bounce back from his injury layoffs as he won Argentina when he finally started his 2023 season in February. Alcaraz then picked up the Indian Wells title following his absence from Acapulco, but fans are split over their concern for his recent physical woes

Express Sport readers were divided when asked when the eight-time title winner’s career could be wrecked by injuries. 51 per cent voted yes, while 49 per cent thought Alcaraz would be just fine.

It comes after tennis legend Jimmy Connors addressed the former world No 1’s recent spate of injuries and said that Alcaraz was of an age where there shouldn’t be too many physical worries. “Takes me back a little bit cause he is young, he’s 19 or 20 years old and you know now this is the time, he should take advantage of being physically fit and young,” the eight-time Major champion said on his Advantage Connors podcast.

Connors confessed that Alcaraz’s explosive game style had to have an impact on him eventually but was still impressed by the teenager’s ability to keep winning between his setbacks. “On the other hand, I can say this because I had them myself and that’s why you get paid the big bucks to be in shape,” he said.
