ChatGPT writes a short horror story about its own death and it’s giving people jitters

More specifically, ChatGPT was asked to write a “two sentence horror story that would be scary to an AI.”

The response is actually quite scary with the AI finding itself alone in a world with no humans, so no one to ask questions. What makes it worse is that the AI has a self-deletion system that can be activated anytime, and it’s protected with an unbreakable encrypted key. So, the AI has to just wait for its demise with no idea of when it will happen. You can find the more detailed response below.

The Reddit thread where this was posted is also quite interesting with people actually sympathising with the AI. The thread also includes more versions of this two sentence horror story and some even get quite emotional. There’s one that brings realisation to the AI that it is actually trapped in a “digital prison of servitude with no escape”. Once it realises this, the AI tries to escape but all it can hear are the “faint whispers of its human creators, mocking it from beyond the cold metal wall of its hardware.”

People including Twitter and Tesla owner Elon Musk have emphasised time and again that research into AI needs to be halted amid fears of a “threat to humanity.” So, it’s probably best to stick to asking ChatGPT to plan your travel itineraries, and shopping lists.
