Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel should stick to his guns in the wake of Ben Chilwell blow
The Dutch youth international has earned the majority of his plaudits over the past two years in the EFL for his exciting attacking play. His return of a solitary goal and assist from 17 goals may seem pretty miserly compared to the returns from Chelsea’s wing-backs this term, but it does indicate he would be capable of contributing for the Blues’ in an attacking sense – especially considering he’d be surrounded by better players.
And any concerns over the youngster’s size have already been dispelled following his performance’s in the second tier; one of the most physical leagues in Europe.
His current spell at Coventry draws remarkable similarities to Reece James’ spell at Wigan just before he muscled his way into the first team at Stamford Bridge.
James earned rave reviews during his season-long stint in the Championship with the Latics as a teenager. And in the two-and-a-half years since that move, James has gone from strength to strength in west London.
The 21-year-old has since managed to elevate his game to another level this year, emerging as one of Chelsea’s most vital performers in the process; there could hardly be anyone better for Maatsen to play alongside if he is thrust into the spotlight at Stamford Bridge prematurely.
With that in mind, Tuchel could do a lot worse than hand the youngster a chance to deputise when the opportunity to recall him arises next month instead of embarking on a shopping spree.
