Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel sweating on fitness of two players for trip to Tottenham

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel will be sweating on the fitness of Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante when his side travel to Tottenham for their Carabao Cup semi-final second leg on Wednesday night. The Blues took control of the contest last week after winning the first leg 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

Silva and Kante both missed last Wednesday’s clash as well as Sunday’s FA Cup game with Chesterfield after testing positive for Covid.

And Tuchel says the players could still be absent for the last four encounter at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“We have the same guys as we have in the cup game,” Tuchel told reporters on Tuesday.

“No new injuries, which is good for us. Then we have to wait on the last-minute decisions for Thiago Silva and N’Golo Kante.

“I don’t know. I have to wait in training. It’s a gamble and I am not sure if we do it and how much responsibility we can take there.”

“For example now, if you want to release players after being positive you have to follow official protocol, which we do.

“Then we have to be very flexible and it can be that both of them [Silva and Kante] arrive later in the afternoon and train.”

Chelsea are big favourites to reach the final after gaining the upper hand in the first leg.

But Tuchel insisted his side still need to produce a good performance across the capital if they are progress to the showpiece event.

“I would say we have no foot in the final – not half a foot or one foot,” the German added.

“Why lose energy thinking about this? Spurs are a very good team and have a top, top coach – so we need to be prepared.

“Maybe it is better not to think too much. We need to be fully aware of everything and adapt to the situation.

“We always prepare properly – on the front foot – and have huge respect for the competition and our opponents. If you do not arrive prepared then you have no chance to win consistently.”
