Chelsea could be dealt title blow with Club World Cup set to cause fixture chaos

Chelsea’s second Champions League title in their history last season means they have been enrolled in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup – and the hectic schedule means that two Premier League games of theirs will have to be rearranged if they are to compete in the United Arab Emirates.

A famous Kai Havertz winner in May condemned Manchester City to a 1-0 defeat in Porto and saw Thomas Tuchel’s side achieve glory.

Winning their first Champions League in nine years, the Blues were ecstatic in front of a reduced-capacity crowd in Portugal.

The victors of the prestigious competition are always obliged to take part in the Club World Cup the season after as a result.

And Chelsea’s campaign has been set for Feb 3 to Feb 12 – meaning they will have to find new dates for Arsenal at home and Brighton away.

With the footballing schedule looking as busy as ever around that time, Chelsea’s calendar is set to pile up.

And it could well impact their hunt for the sextuple if they aim to progress in the cup competitions that take place around that time.

Liverpool famously travelled to the Club World Cup and fielded a youth team in the Carabao Cup against Aston Villa just two seasons ago to all but end their chances of winning the accolade.

Chelsea will discover their semi-final opponents for the Club World Cup when the draw takes place later today.

And as they currently top the Premier League, they will fancy their chances of winning.

The Blues produced a disappointing 1-1 draw against Manchester United on Sunday, though, as they slipped up for the second time at home in as many Premier League games.

And Tuchel aired his frustrations at an inability to make all three points count.

“It’s happened twice that we play good games against Burnley and Manchester United and we feel disappointed,” said Tuchel.

“Over a long season you drop points, you dig in and you try to steal them back when someone steals points from you.

“This is what we will try to do. Don’t count the points when you are one up or four up.

“We are in the middle and that is what we need.”
