Chelsea eye another Sturridge move as Liverpool ‘uninterested’ in bidding war

Daniel Sturridge ended up proving Manchester City wrong for letting him go as a youth player and Romeo Lavia may be another one who can establish himself as a strong Premier League star with both Chelsea and Liverpool linked. Lavia has been touted as a target for Jurgen Klopp with the Reds keen to bolster their midfield ranks this summer.

Liverpool would be hoping to bring in Lavia on a bargain deal following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League. But they’re unlikely to be the only team interested in signing him with Chelsea are already putting in the work to lodge a bid of their own.

According to Football Insider’s David Lynch, Liverpool are not prepared to enter a bidding war for the midfielder and want ‘guarantees’ that Lavia’s preferred move would be to Anfield before pushing for a move. Whoever signs Lavia are destined to be signing a Premier League superstar with Lavia shining in an otherwise uninspiring Southampton side last year.

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes waxed lyrical about the midfielder last year, admitting he was surprised that Manchester City let him go. “I was surprised when City let him go I think he is good enough potentially, he is only 18-years-old maybe hold him back a bit,” Scholes said.

“He has chosen to move on and I think he is a player with so much potential and he could potentially go back, but he has settled in so well. He has got a pass in his locker and he is big and strong and likes to defend.

“He does not want to get forward too much and sits in-front of the back four and sets the play in motion from there.” City do have a buy-back option for Lavia reported to be around £40million and Pep Guardiola is clearly a fan of the 19-year-old.

“I am really impressed with what Romeo has done and is doing,” he said in April. “We had, and we have, an incredible opinion about him. We thought to keep him, but maybe he would not (get) enough minutes like he has in Southampton.”

If Chelsea manage to win the race for Lavia’s signing then they may make City live to regret not keeping the youngster at the club. But Liverpool may also want to keep a close eye on Lavia’s situation having had success in the past with players who left City at a young age only to find themselves at Anfield years later.
