Chelsea fans turn on stars despite Frank Lampard ending losing run
Chelsea got their first win under Frank Lampard as they defeated Bournemouth 3-1 on Saturday. Conor Gallagher gave the Blues the lead after nine minutes, getting on the end of N’Golo Kante’s cross to head past Neto. The visitors’ lead lasted just 11 minutes, however, as Matias Vina finished a fine move to level the scores. The game appeared to be heading for a draw, before Benoit Badiashile got on the end of a free-kick to score his first goal for the club and Joao Felix sealed the victory with his cool finish. Express Sport looks at some of the biggest talking points from the game, including strong disappointment from the Chelsea fans.
Lampard dismal run ends
Going into Saturday’s game, Lampard had lost all six games in charge since returning to Stamford Bridge following Graham Potter’s sacking – scoring just two goals in the process.
Gallagher remained the only player to score under Lampard in his second spell at the club, as his two strikes and an own goal had been the only times Chelsea have hit the back of the net in nearly seven games.
That was until Badiashile met Hakim Ziyech’s cross and Neto was unable to keep out his effort out and then Felix got a third to seal the victory.
Mudryk concern
Mykhaylo Mudryk was given another chance from the start as Lampard rung the changes on the south coast, though there will have been concerns over the yellow card he was shown for diving in the first half.
In an attempt to go around his man near the byline he felt a slight touch on the arm and fell to the floor, prompting the referee to award him a yellow for simulation – though the call felt harsh as the Ukrainian did not protest heavily for a penalty on the wet turf.
He did have some bright sparks on the left, as Chelsea with Mudryk and Noni Madueke on the flanks felt more on the front foot, before Raheem Sterling came on to replace Mudryk shortly after the hour mark.
Lampard makes call for next season
Having recently persisted with the likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Joao Felix, Mateo Kovacic and Cesar Azpilicueta who are increasingly unlikely to remain at Stamford Bridge next season, Lampard made a conscious decision to start a team of players that will be keen to impress the next head coach.
Trevoh Chalobah came in for Azpilicueta at right-back, while goalscorer Gallagher replaced Kovacic and a front three of Madueke, Kai Havertz and Mudryk will all be hoping to make an impact with potential new boss Mauricio Pochettino likely to be watching on.
Several of those did make a positive impression, as Gallagher once again showed his goalscoring capabilities by finding space in the box – while Madueke was the best player on the pitch and followed on from his performance against Arsenal with another strong display at the Vitality.
Fans turn on Sterling
After Sterling was substituted on for Mudryk on the hour mark, there were clear voices of discontent from the travelling Chelsea faithful as they booed his arrival to the pitch.
The England star has struggled since his big-money move from Manchester City this summer, as Blues fans have clearly lost patience with the forward and preferred the Ukrainian to stay on the pitch.
However, Lampard’s substitutions proved useful on the day as Ziyech provided the ball for the second goal and then Felix shortly after stepping on the pitch got the Blues’ third goal after Sterling had driven into the box to set the Portuguese forward up.
