Chelsea hit their own ‘transfer deadline day’ as £175m raised and seven more …
As June draws to a close, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has finally arrived at his own ‘transfer deadline day’. The Blues have been in a hurry to try and balance the books after splurging over the past two transfer windows, and although they have already raised a healthy amount through player sales, more cash could be on the way.
Chelsea tore up the rule book last summer and they repeated the feat in January, breaking the record for the amount spent by one club in a single window twice in 12 months. An outlay of around £600million always needed to be balanced out, and the Blues have already offloaded a number of players this summer.
And that’s just as well, with June 30 the cut-off point for player sales to be included in their 2022/23 accounts. Also included in those accounts will be the mammoth fees spent on the likes of Enzo Fernandez, Mykhaylo Mudryk and Raheem Sterling.
With the urgency around player sales making the end of the month Chelsea’s own mini ‘deadline day‘, Boehly and co will be pleased that a number of high-profile players have already departed.
A total of around £120m has been raised through the sales of Kai Havertz, Mateo Kovacic, Kalidou Koulibaly and Edouard Mendy. Meanwhile, N’Golo Kante is bedding in at Al-Ittihad after completing a free transfer and Tiemoue Bakayoko was released to ease strain on the wage bill.
That total will soon be boosted by the sale of Mason Mount to Manchester United, with the two clubs finally agreeing on a guaranteed £55m fee on Thursday. Having struggled to cope with a bloated squad last campaign, more exits are on the horizon.
Elsewhere, Christian Pulisic and Cesar Azpilicueta are reportedly on the chopping block as Pochettino seeks to streamline his squad and Boehly looks to balance the books.
The seventh and final name is Conor Gallagher, whose future remains up in the air. Pochettino is reportedly keen to work with the player, but the club would be inclined to accept the right size offer given their existing options in midfield.
