Premier League clubs are set to be involved in a landmark vote to ban loan moves for players between associated clubs, according to reports. Chelsea, Manchester City and Newcastle United would be among those impacted by proposed changes that would come into effect in January.
According to The Athletic, the next Premier League shareholders’ meeting will involve all 20 clubs voting to fast-track a ban on the loans in the winter transfer window.
League organisers are said to be considering it a temporary measure to protect the integrity of top-flight competition and allow more time to agree on a permanent solution.
Many Premier League sides operate as part of a multi-club model, including Chelsea, Man City and Newcastle.
Reports linking Ruben Neves to a January switch to St. James’ Park have been met with concerns, given Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) is the majority owner of Newcastle and Al Hilal.
Neves has allegedly emerged as a target in the wake of summer signing Sandro Tonali’s 10-month suspension for breaching betting rules.
The 26-year-old signed for Al Hilal from Wolves in the same transfer window as one of numerous high-profile players to join the Saudi Pro League revolution.
The Athletic add that the proposal hasn’t been fast-tracked solely to block Neves’ potential move to Newcastle.
But it’s part of a deeper dive into associated party transactions in the Premier League, including shirt sponsorships.
The competition defines a related party as having ‘material influence over the club or (being) an entity in the same group of companies as the club’.
The meeting, set to take place on November 21, will put the temporary rule change in front of all 20 Premier League clubs.
