Chelsea ‘offered’ Adrien Rabiot as five clubs eye bargain transfer

Chelsea have reportedly been offered the opportunity to sign Adrien Rabiot from Juventus, with several other European heavyweights also in contention. Rabiot should be available for a cut-price fee as his Juve contract winds down, and competition could be fierce amid an impressive World Cup campaign with France.

Injuries to Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante undoubtedly helped Rabiot’s cause regarding his starting spot in France’s midfield for the 2022 World Cup. Without being spectacular, he has been effective for Les Bleus as they gear up to face Argentina in the final on Sunday.

With his Juventus contract up in June, Rabiot’s entourage are supposedly eyeing up possible destinations ahead of the January transfer window. Manchester United held talks over the summer but the 27-year-old’s salary demands prompted them to walk away from the deal.

Even so, 90min claim that the Red Devils are still in contention alongside Chelsea, Barcelona, Liverpool and Tottenham, who have all been invited to table offers.

Rabiot had a brief spell training with Manchester City as a youngster but he made his breakthrough with Paris Saint-Germain, where he spent seven years in the senior team before moving on to Turin in 2019. A rangy midfielder with solid all-round attributes, the Frenchman’s output has never been his main selling point but he has shown over the past few games with Les Bleus that he can make an impact at the top level.

Illness recently swept the France squad with Rabiot and Dayot Upamecano missing the semi-final win over Morocco this week, although the midfielder is supposedly back in contention to feature against Argentina.

Kingsley Coman is another player now feeling under the weather, with manager Didier Deschamps explaining: “He had a fever this morning. We have had a few cases of flu-like symptoms. We are trying to be careful so that it does not spread. The players have put in a great effort on the pitch and obviously their immune systems have suffered.

“Dayot Upamecano felt bad right after the game against England. It happens when you exert yourself so much, you are more prone to getting these viruses. We’re taking all the necessary precautions.”
