Todd Boehly and his Chelsea recruitment team have reportedly decided that they want to permanently sign Joao Felix ‘no matter what’ this summer. The Atletico Madrid loanee supposedly wants to stay, despite the team’s woeful form, amid claims that he ‘cannot stop boasting’ about one particular aspect of life at Stamford Bridge.
Felix was part of Chelsea’s lucrative recruitment drive during the January transfer window. And while he only signed on loan, it was not without financial commitment for the Blues as they reportedly forked out £9.7million for the short-term arrangement.
The 23-year-old has only scored twice in 12 games since making his bow in English football, but fans and coaches are believed to be impressed by what they have seen from Felix, who remains one of the most expensive players in history after ditching Benfica for Atletico in 2019.
Worryingly for the Blues, however, they opted against inserting a permanent buy option in his loan deal. As such, negotiations will have to start afresh this summer and Atletico are not prepared to sell on the cheap.
That much is understandable, given that the Rojiblancos splashed a whopping £113m in a deal that failed to see Felix reach his full potential. While they may not be able to recoup all of that fee, Chelsea may still be required to part with an eye-watering sum, but AS claim that Boehly and co want the Portuguese star no matter what.
In fact, the club will supposedly consider asking Felix to pitch the permanent sale to his parent club in the hope that it will speed up the process. The player does not want to return to the Spanish capital after rumours of a rift with manager Diego Simeone.
A clear-out is expected at the end of the season to ease the pressure of a bloated squad, which troubled Graham Potter before he was sacked. Frank Lampard has been placed in temporary charge while the search for a long-term appointment continues behind the scenes.
Although Lampard is set to stay in his post until the summer, Chelsea supposedly want certainty over his successor as soon as possible so that they can ‘start talking figures‘ with Atletico for Felix.
