Chelsea star Mudryk set for ‘private Pochettino talks’ as details emerge
Mauricio Pochettino is hoping he can bring the best out of Mykhaylo Mudryk next season. The Ukrainian winger has had a tough start to life at Stamford Bridge since signing for the Blues in January for £89million.
But Pochettino believes he carries significant potential and is “keen” to work one-on-one with the 22-year-old to help him find his feet in the Premier League, according to football insider Ben Jacobs. It is claimed that part of the focus will be on helping the winger be more vocal and culture-orientated.
Mudryk will no doubt be pleased with the extra attention as he enters a do-or-die campaign with Chelsea. Another poor season could see him shipped out on loan or worse still sold in the following summer. Liverpool legend Stan Collymore believes Pochettino’s style of play will bring the best out of Mudryk.
The Argentine tends to favour counter-attacking football, which the youngster has become accustomed to during his time at Shakhtar Donetsk. Mudryk is at his best when he can break into open space and showed that in his Premier League debut against Liverpool.
The Ukrainian turned James Milner inside out when he was given time to run at him with the ball and clocked the fastest speed run in the Premier League last season during the game (36.61km/h).
However, if Pochettino can’t get a ‘tune out of Mudryk’ then Collymore doesn’t fancy his chances of coming good. He told Caught Offside shortly before Pochettino’s appointment as Chelsea manager: “Mauricio Pochettino is coming in though and he has a style of football that you would assume will benefit Mudryk.
“So, if the Argentine can’t get a tune out of him and we’re talking about him, in the same way, this time next year, then I think it’ll be time to worry. But as for right now, I think he still has huge potential and next season I do expect him to show vast improvements in his individual game.”
Mudryk failed to score in all 15 of his Premier League appearances for Chelsea last season and was named the biggest flop of the 2022-2023 campaign by ESPN.
