Chelsea to cash in Granovskaia parting gift as Man Utd ramp up transfer pursuit
Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly may have former chief Marina Granovskaia to thank for a potential transfer windfall this summer, as the likes of Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham have been linked with one of the club’s former players in Marc Guehi. The England international has impressed since departing Stamford Bridge in 2021 but the former regime may have done the current hierarchy a favour.
After a successful loan spell at Swansea, Guehi returned to Chelsea but found himself on the fringes of the squad under Thomas Tuchel and was prepared to leave in search of first-team football at Crystal Palace.
He became Palace’s third-most expensive signing of all-time behind Christian Benteke and Mamadou Sakho, as the Blues were prepared to let the defender leave for £18million.
Now after two impressive seasons at Selhurst Park alongside Joachim Anderson, he could be set for a big move as the likes of United, Arsenal and Spurs hold an interest in Guehi, according to the Daily Mail. The trio are monitoring his situation ahead of the summer as they all look to bolster their defensive options, though may have to fork out a large fee in order to land the 22-year-old.
Palace are said to demand a minimum of £50m for his services with three years left on his contract in south London, though will hope to offset the fee that Chelsea will also receive if Guehi does move on. Ex-chief Granovskaia reportedly negotiated a 20 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal that saw Guehi leave Chelsea, which could net the club a vital £10m this summer.
Boehly and co have spent over £600m since arriving at Stamford Bridge but the majority of their signings have not lived up to their expectations and further investment will be needed ahead of next season. The club had already been put on a Financial Fair Play watchlist by UEFA in September and could face further punishments if their situation is not rectified.
Mason Mount could headline a clear-out this summer as potential incoming head coach Mauricio Pochettino looks set to inherit a bloated squad that will need trimming.
The likes of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hakim Ziyech, Kalidou Koulibaly, Mateo Kovacic, Christian Pulisic and Trevoh Chalobah could all depart due to the financial situation at the club.
Chelsea will be hoping that a bidding war ensues among their rivals for Guehi this summer in order to drive the price up for their former defender and ensure they make use of the windfall that Granovskaia negotiated in her final year at the club before Boehly and co took over.
