Chelsea warned off ‘extremely average’ England star Jordan Pickford
Chelsea have been warned against signing ‘extremely average’ England star Jordan Pickford by former goalkeeping coach Christophe Lollichon. The Blues have been previously credited with an interest in the Everton player with the club looking to improve between the sticks given the questions over the ability of Edouard Mendy and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
The goalkeeper has not been a position of strength for Chelsea since Thibaut Courtois left to join Real Madrid in 2018. Arrizabalaga inherited the position from the Belgian and started well before his form fell off a cliff after he refused to be substituted by Mauricio Sarri in the 2019 League Cup final.
Willy Caballero had a short spell in goal as a result before Mendy arrived in 2020. He was initially excellent for the Blues, helping to win the Champions League in 2021 but looked short on confidence this year, with Arrizabalaga taking his place after Graham Potter’s arrival.
With neither keeper in top form, the former Brighton coach and club owner Todd Boehly set their sights on a new No 1 and Pickford has been among the names linked. However, former Blues goalkeeping coach Lollichon has offered a word of warning stating the Englishman is ‘extremely average’.

“It was about 25 or 26 yards out, Bellingham’s about 25 yards from the goal and it’s gone through his legs,” he told his followers on his Tik Tok account. “That has not put Jordan Pickford off whatsoever right?
“What I think has happened is that he’s just got a little bit slow at moving his feet. I don’t think he’s underestimated that the ball is going to be curling that quickly, but as a goalkeeper at that level – again, at that level right? – you have to almost overcompensate for that.
“You almost have to dive past the ball, do you know what I mean? I think most Premier League goalies make that save, I really do. I think most Premier League goalies make that save, full stop.”
