Chelsea star Armando Broja was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after suffering a serious knee injury during the club’s friendly against Aston Villa on Sunday. Chelsea were playing their first game since the Premier League season finished a month ago.
It was a chance for Graham Potter to give a number of his fringe players valuable minutes ahead of the season restarting. Building up match fitness would have also been key for Potter, but the Chelsea boss was dealt a bitter blow when Broja went down with a worrying injury in the opening 45 minutes.
The 21-year-old was starting up top for the Blues alongside Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang while the likes of Marc Cucurella and Jorginho also started. Broja was chasing down Villa’s defenders inside their own box when Ezri Konsa got himself in trouble.
The Villa central defender attempted to skip away from Broja as the Chelsea forward dove in to try and make a challenge on the six-yard box. But Broja seemingly landed awkwardly with his knee twisting under the weight of his body.
Screams could be heard from the Albanian as he lay on the floor clutching at his right knee.
