Chelsea’s potential XI next season if four star defenders leave in the summer

Chelsea’s superb season continues to offer trophies aplenty with the Blues still in all four major competitions. Despite shipping six goals in their last two games, manager Thomas Tuchel still has faith in his defence, yet with four of his defensive stars – Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, Thiago Silva and Andreas Christensen – out of contract in the summer there may have to be some big changes this summer. Express Sport takes a look at their potential XI next season.

Edouard Mendy has come under flak in recent days for his performance against West Ham on Saturday.

The Senegalese keeper gave away a needless penalty which was converted by Manuel Lanzini, before conceding a fortuitous cross by Arthur Masuaku late on as the Blues lost 3-2.

Yet the shot stopper has saved Chelsea so often this season that the performance at the London Stadium has seen many brush over it.

And those performances will likely see Mendy remain Chelsea keeper next season.

Defence: Kounde, Chalobah, Fofana

A move for Jules Kounde was attempted over the summer window, although a bid was eventually rejected for the Sevilla defender before the window ended.

Having sold Kurt Zouma, Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi alongside the expiration of the four out-of-contract stars, Chelsea chiefs are in need of defensive reinforcements should contract renewals not be dished out.

The Blues have further been linked with Leicester defender Wesley Fofana, although the Frenchman is currently out with a broken leg.

And with Trevoh Chalobah having broken into the side, his place may be guaranteed should he continue his form.

Midfield: James, Kante, Mount, Chilwell

James and Chilwell have been two of Chelsea’s standout performers this season.

The English duo look set to dominate the wide positions at Stamford Bridge for some time, especially 22-year-old James who has already made 100 appearances for the Blues.

Elsewhere, N’Golo Kante will likely continue displaying his brilliance in the centre of the park in a bid to bring more trophies to Stamford Bridge.

And golden boy Mason Mount will likely start alongside Kante as he continues his development under Tuchel.

Attack: Havertz, Lukaku, Pulisic

Star signing Romelu Lukaku has yet to impress after a serious injury ruled the Belgian out for over a month.

With just three goals in 10 Premier League games, Lukaku will have to step up to the plate if he is to justify his £97million fee.

Havertz displays a similar story, although this season the German has started to come into his own in a more prominent role.

And Pulisic makes up the final three to give the Blues a real attacking impetus.
