Christian Horner changes tune on Lewis Hamilton as he riles up Toto Wolff again
Christian Horner has backtracked on comments this week where he claimed there had been “an inquiry” from Lewis Hamilton about the possibility of joining Red Bull next season. Horner’s comments infuriated Toto Wolff who questioned his rival’s motives. Hamilton strongly denied the claims from Horner, stating it was his compatriot who tried reaching out to him.
The Briton went on to mock Horner for being “a little bit lonely” and using his name to get more attention. The back-and-forth continued on Friday when Horner was asked to clarify his comments and the Red Bull team principal attempted to play down his previous remarks and admitted it was Anthony Hamilton who he spoke with earlier in the year.
“It’s remarkable how much traction this has got,” Horner said. “I mean, it’s a question of ‘He said, she said, who said, what said’…
“It’s entirely normal for drivers, drivers’ representatives and drivers’ parents to have different conversations during the course of the year.” He added: “Look we haven’t had any serious discussion with Lewis there was never a seat available.

“I’ve known Anthony Hamilton for many years. He’s a good guy, he’s a proud racing father and inevitably when drivers go through tough spots. Let’s face it Lewis hasn’t won a Grand Prix for two years it’s inevitable that questions will be asked up and down up and down the paddock.
“But there was never any engagement and I don’t know who represents who or what but with the same surname you would think they were reasonably close.” Horner’s comments haven’t sat well with Wolff, who can’t understand why Horner felt compelled to make the claim of a discussion between Red Bull and Hamilton in the first place.
“I just don’t know what drives the guy,” Wolff said. “We just don’t understand his thinking to come up with these things.
“What happened is that Christian, through an agency that we work with, wanted to have Lewis’ contact details to speak about the seat. That’s how the whole thing went.
“It was Christian enquiring about Lewis’ availability. Lewis had an exchange with Christian, which he immediately told me about, and which was not about a seat but it was just blah.”
