Christian Horner has underlined the difficulty of the task facing Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes in chasing down Red Bull, who he believes are operating at the highest level in their entire history. The Austrian team have won every single race in 2023 so far and have been considerably quicker than any of their rivals since F1’s technical regulations were overhauled last year.
There seems to be no end in sight to Red Bull’s dominance as things stand, with Max Verstappen almost certain to be the favourite to clinch a sixth straight Grand Prix victory at Silverstone this weekend. The team are no strangers to achieving success in F1, having won four successive Constructors’ Championship titles between 2010 and 2013, but Horner is adamant that Red Bull are currently stronger than ever before.
“I think we are operating at the highest level that this team has seen in our 19-year history, it is a halcyon period for the team,” Horner told The Guardian. “Of course we will go to Silverstone with confidence, but also acutely aware that it is very easy to drop the ball and for variables that are sometimes beyond your control.
“What was impressive in Austria was that throughout all the conditions we have stayed on top of them and executed a very good Grand Prix. This is our best run of in-season results since Sebastian Vettel in 2013. We have won nine races in a row in a season. We obviously want to keep this roll going as long as we can but how long? Only time will tell.
“It’s down to every single department, to achieve results like this it’s not just about the race team it is about all the activity that goes on behind the scenes in the factory. You have to work as a team as one team. That’s where we have been incredibly strong.”
Red Bull are already 244 points ahead of Mercedes in the Constructors’ Championship standings, which only serves to highlight the sheer gulf in class between the two teams at present. It would be a major surprise if the Silver Arrows manage to catch up to their Austrian rivals any time soon, although they will be hoping to improve on their lacklustre performance in Austria last weekend at the British Grand Prix this Sunday.
Mercedes are set to introduce a number of exciting upgrades at Silverstone, which has led to a sense of increased optimism within the team as of late.
