clipchamp: Clipchamp video editor now allows users to create 1080p videos for free – Times of India

Clipchamp is a cloud-based video editor that was acquired by Microsoft in September 2021. Initially, Windows 11 came with a shortcut for a Clipchamp PWA (progressive web app) which had to be downloaded and installed. However, Microsoft recently started pre-installing the app with Windows 11. Now, the app is getting an important upgrade since its initial launch as Microsoft decides to bring support for 1080p video exports to the free segment of Clipchamp and users won’t have to pay a premium to use this feature.
Previously, some users found the pricing structure unjustified, as the free tier allowed users to export videos only at a 480p resolution. Moreover, the first paid tier that allowed 720p exports was also priced at $9 (around Rs 700) per month. Now, the 1080p video exports are also included in the free tier. However, it is important to note that Microsoft still doesn’t allow users to export video at a resolution higher than 1080p on any of the Clipchamp tiers. Users won’t find this app ideal if they need to work with 4K videos.
All the other perks from the paid tier have remained unchanged, which includes — unlimited cloud storage and audio stock in the Creator tier at $9 per month, a brand kit in the Business tier at $19 per month (around Rs 1,400) and unlimited video and image stock in the Business Premium tier for $39 per month (around Rs 3,000).
Earlier, Microsoft said it won’t be making any changes to the pricing structure of Clipchamp. This seems like an important and interesting change considering the tech giant’s previous decision on the video editor’s pricing structure. With 1080p video being available to everyone, the value proposition has changed a lot even though the prices are still the same as before.
We have to wait to find out if Microsoft adds new values to the higher tiers or simplify the pricing structure in the future. Additional features may also get added to Microsoft 365, but there’s been no official confirmation about the same.
