College football rankings: Projected NCAA top 25 teams after Week 7

It just wouldn’t be a college football weekend in 2021 if at least one team didn’t suffer an upset that absolutely no one saw coming.

No. 2 Iowa took that loss in Week 7, falling 24-7 to unranked Purdue in Kinnick Stadium to once again jumble the college football rankings. This wasn’t a last-second victory or a furious comeback by Jeff Brohm’s Boilermakers: Purdue was thoroughly and completely outclassed in the defeat, giving up 375 passing yards to quarterback Aidan O’Connell and 240 receiving yards to David Bell. Conversely, Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras threw four interceptions.

The Hawkeyes weren’t the only ranked team to lose Saturday.

No. 11 Kentucky proved little challenge for top-ranked Georgia, but it did notch a moral victory by scoring two touchdowns in the 30-13 loss in Sanford Stadium. No. 20 Florida took a huge upset on the chin against unranked LSU, helping beleaguered coach Ed Orgeron survive another week.

Elsewhere, unranked Auburn, Utah and Baylor beat No. 17 Arkansas, No. 18 Arizona State and No. 19 BYU, respectively. No. 12 Oklahoma State knocked No. 25 Texas from the top 25 after the Longhorns surrendered a 17-3 lead and lost 32-24.

But what about ranked teams that won? Georgia did its part, as mentioned, and so did Oklahoma and Alabama. The Sooners played their best football all season with Caleb Williams leading the way in a 52-31 win over TCU, while the Crimson Tide returned to form with a 49-9 rout of Mississippi State. Oregon and Michigan State suffered close calls against Cal and Indiana, respectively. Ole Miss did too, avoiding an upset by Tennessee — and golf balls — to win 31-26 in Knoxville
