Collin Sexton: Cavaliers guard to miss remainder of season after surgery to repair torn meniscus

Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton is expected to miss the remainder of the 2021-22 season after undergoing surgery to repair a left meniscus tear, the team announced. 

His absence is a huge blow for the team, who had gotten off to a strong start by nine of their first 14 games which included a five-game Western Conference road trip.

Appearing in the first 11 games of the season, the 22-year-old was averaging 16.0 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 28.7 minutes of action.

When did Collin Sexton suffer the injury?

As per the team announcement, Sexton suffered the injury during the Cavaliers game against the Knicks at the Madison Square Garden on Nov. 7. 

The team’s release further states that with surgery considered the best course of action, the 6-foot-1 guard underwent the surgery to repair the torn meniscus in his right knee on Wed., Nov. 17.

How long is Collin Sexton ruled out? What is Collin Sexton’s injury history?

The exact timetable for Sexton’s return remains unknown, however, the team has termed it a ‘season-ending’ knee injury which makes it quite clear.

So, it would be safe to expect the guard to come back at the start of next season. 

Prior to this injury, Sexton has been quite durable. Through his previous three seasons, he has played in all but 12 games. 

What is Collin Sexton’s future?

The 2021-22 season was the final year of Sexton’s  4 year / $20,175,111 that he signed with the Cavaliers as a rookie. 

He enters the 2022 offseason as a restricted free agency and this injury certainly hampers his chances of landing a big contract, having not signed an extension before the deadline, which was prior to the 2021-22 season tip-off.
