Computex 2023: Nvidia Introduces Ultra-Low Motion Blur 2 for Gaming Monitors

At Computex 2023, Nvidia launched the Ultra-Low Motion Blur 2 technology for ‘competitive gamers’. This is the latest version of their 2015 technology of Ultra Low Motion Blur, also known as ULMB. Nvidia now claims that ULMB 2 takes sharpness and smoothness in high-definition motion pictures up a notch, with their new backlight strobing technology. Here’s more on the details.

What is ULMB 2?

LCD screens usually work in two layers. The first is of liquid crystal pixels, and the second is a backlight behind the crystal layer which casts light through the pixels. Backlight Strobing technology counters the challenges produced when the crystal layer transitions between frames or images, and the backlight remains on the entire time. This makes the transition detectable to the human eye as jerks or blurs.

With ULMB 2, the backlight automatically switches off during the transitions between frames. Additionally, Nvidia’s ULMB 2 technology, with the help of G-Sync, controls the response time, to counter the effects of the rolling scanout of the pixels on the crystal layer. G-Sync’s patented vertical dependent overdrive, “allows pixels further away from the pulse to settle at a normal rate, while pixels right before the pulse can be driven with a more aggressive overdrive. With this technique, the vast majority of the screen can be at the ideal transition point when it comes time to pulse the backlight, even at the full refresh rate.”, claims Nvidia.

With ULMB 2, the smoothness that can be produced only in monitors with very high refresh rates (above 1200 Hz), can be reproduced at refresh rate ranges starting at 360 Hz, making gaming in high-definition and impeccable quality much more cost-effective.

How to upgrade your monitor with ULMB 2

Nvidia ULMB 2 is only a firmware update away from your gaming monitors. Nvidia has already rolled out ULMB 2 for select gaming monitors at the Computex 2023. These include-

ULMB 2 can be downloaded from the respective companies’ pages. Nvidia has additionally announced that ULMB 2 will soon be rolled out for the ASUS ROG Swift Pro PG248QP – 25” 1080p 540 Hz, and AOC AGON AG276QSG G-SYNC Monitor – 27” 1440p 360 Hz as well.
