Conor Benn has been stripped of his boxing license by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) after failing a drugs test prior to his fight against Chris Eubank Jr, the organisation has announced. The boxer has voluntarily relinquished his licence after a hearing with the BBBofC on Friday, where the board claimed allegations against the British boxer were “upheld”.
In a letter signed by the general secretary Robert W. Smith, the statement, released on Wednesday, read: ”By a notice dated 17th October 2022, Mr Conor Benn was called by the Board of the BBBofC to attend a hearing to deal with allegations of misconduct pursuant to Rule 25.1.1.
“The hearing took place on 21st October 2022. On the morning of the hearing, Mr Benn voluntarily relinquished his licence with the BBBofC.
“In accordance with its Rules and Regulation, the Board determined the allegations following the hearing at which Mr Benn was legally represented. The allegations of misconduct against Mr Benn were upheld.”
Benn is facing allegations that he failed a drugs test before his fight with Chris Eubank Jr, which was due to go ahead on October 8 at the O2 Arena in London. The fight was called off after Benn returned a test containing an “adverse analytical finding” for traces of a fertility drug, clomifene.
The fertility drug is primarily used to treat infertility in women who do not ovulate. But when used by men it can act as a testosterone booster and drugs masker, banned in all mainstream sports.
The British Boxing Board of Control announced the clash was “prohibited as it is not in the interests of boxing”, after promoters Matchroom Boxing and Wasserman Boxing released a joint statement earlier in the day announcing the fight would go ahead as scheduled.
Earlier this month, the 26-year-old son of former professional boxer Nigel Benn was then hit with another accusation of a second failed drugs test for the same banned substance.
Benn responded with a post on Instagram, appearing to deny the allegations: “I hope the apology is as loud as the disrespect,” he wrote.
UK Anti-doping is currently investigated the alleged positive test as they are duty bound to investigate any doping case involving a violation by a boxer licensed by the BBBOC, which is under its jurisdiction.
If Benn is found guilty of an anti-doping violation, he could receive a suspension of up to four years.
