Constantine 2: Warner Bros. Confirms Keanu Reeves Sequel Is Still Happening
Despite the big DC Studios reset from James Gunn and Peter Safran, Warner Bros. has confirmed that the Keanu Reeves-led Constantine 2 is still in the works.
As reported by EW, the sequel to 2005’s Constantine was confirmed to be going ahead in September 2022 with Reeves, director Francis Lawrence, and producer Akiva Goldsman. Goldsman was also said to be writing the screenplay at the time.
There were no further details given regarding Constantine 2, so we still know very little about the project or when we might see it arrive in theaters. We do know, however, that Reeves really wanted to return to the character, but he found Hollywood had no interest in the sequel when he tried many years ago.
Many people online and off were a bit worried about the fate of Constantine 2, as it wasn’t mentioned during Gunn and Safran’s breakdown of the future of DC Studios. Now, those fans can rest easy.
Gunn and Safran did reveal the beginnings of their current plan for their new DCU, which is being called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. It was also confirmed that The Flash will be responsible for the big reset point for the new DC Universe when it speeds to theaters on June 16.
This new chapter of DC includes Superman: Legacy, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Batman: The Brave and the Bold, Swamp Thing, The Authority, Creature Commandos, Paradise Lost, Waller, Lanterns, Booster Gold, and more.
Speaking of Swamp Thing, Constantine has a huge connection to the character as he first appeared in Swamp Thing #37 back in 1985.
Heading back to Constantine 2, there is a chance it may fall into the Elseworlds category, which is a place where standalone DC films live like Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Joker, and more.
In our Constantine review from 2005, we said, “An achievement of both story and technique, Constantine is one of the finest comic-based films ever made.”
