Cowboy Bebop Creator Hopes to Work on a Live-Action Project

Shinichiro Watanabe, the director of the classic anime Cowboy Bebop, expressed his interest in trying his hand at a live-action project.

During an interview with Full Frontal, Watanabe was asked if he’d like to direct a live-action project. He replied, “I do, but I didn’t really have any opportunities… Or rather, I had one, but it never happened. We didn’t have money, didn’t find actors, there were multiple reasons…

“But if I had another opportunity, I’d take it. I’ve always dreamt of doing live-action, and at first, I really hesitated between doing live-action and animation. I ended up doing animation, and my dreams there have kinda come true (laughs), so now I just have live-action left.”

Watanabe also mentioned that if he were to take on such a project, he would prefer it to be “international.” He jokingly added that if there were any sponsors willing to fund it, they should contact him.

Watanabe is a legendary figure in the anime industry, on par with greats like Satoshi Kon and Hayao Miyazaki. Apart from Cowboy Bebop, some of his other famous works include Samurai Champloo, and Space Dandy.

If Watanabe ventures into live-action, it could potentially have a similar impact as he did in the world of anime. If this live-action project happens to be an adaptation of one of Watanabe’s works, it would be interesting to witness his vision transforming animated content into a live-action format.
