Crystal Dynamics Says Tomb Raider, Perfect Dark Won’t Be Affected By Embracer Layoffs

Don’t worry about Tomb Raider or Perfect Dark, according to developer Crystal Dynamics. Those projects apparently won’t be disrupted after the studio’s parent company Embracer Group announced layoffs, game cancellations, and studio closures.

Crystal Dynamics posted a message on Twitter to clarify that Lara Croft and Joanna Dark’s next adventures aren’t affected by the major restructuring at Embracer. The developer wrote: “We want to reassure fans that there will be no impact to our continuing efforts with our partners at The Initiative on Perfect Dark, or our next Tomb Raider title being developed in collaboration with Amazon Games.”

Embracer employs roughly 17,000 people, but that number will decrease by the end of this year. The restructuring comes shortly after an undisclosed $2 billion deal fell through for the company in May.

In December, Amazon announced it was publishing the next Tomb Raider game. The title will be multiplatform and single-player. Crystal Dynamics–which last worked on Marvel’s Avengers–was acquired by Embracer last year after Square Enix sold the studio and IP.

Perfect Dark was unveiled at The Game Awards in 2020. The following year The Initiative revealed that it was partnering up with Crystal Dynamics to work on the first-person spy thriller, which still doesn’t have a release date.
