CWG 2022: ‘Gold’ rush in wrestling and historic silver medals in athletics headline India’s Day 9 show | Commonwealth Games 2022 News – Times of India

BIRMINGHAM: It was another memorable day for India at the ongoing Commonwealth Games (CWG), where the wrestlers continued to establish their supremacy and clinched three gold medals and as many bronze.
So far the Indian athletes have won 40 medals– 13 gold, 11 silver and 16 bronze — in this edition of the Games, with two more days of competition left.
Saturday was full of medal news for India, headlined by historic feats in athletics and a windfall in wrestling. Avinash Sable won a memorable silver medal in the men’s 3000m steeplechase, while Priyanka Goswami also finished second on the podium to create history by winning the first ever medal by an Indian woman in 10km race walk.

On the wrestling mat, it was a medal rush for India for the second day in a row, with the addition of six more medals by the grapplers.
Vinesh Phogat, Ravi Dahiya and Naveen won gold medals in their respective weight categories. Pooja Sihag, Pooja Gehlot and Deepak Nehra settled for bronze.

On the bowling greens of Victoria Park, lawn bowls continued to script CWG history for India, thanks to the men’s fours team that finished with a silver medal.
In the boxing ring, Indian pugilists Jaismine Lamboria, Mohammad Hussamuddin and Rohit Tokas concluded their campaigns with bronze medals, while Nitu Ghanghas, Amit Panghal, Nikhat Zareen and Sagar succeeded in their semifinal bouts to enter the finals in their respective categories.
In badminton, star shuttler PV Sindhu, Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth all advanced to their singles semifinals, while Aakarshi Kashyap crashed out in the quarters.

Table tennis stars Achanta Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran advanced to the singles semifinals, with Sharath also making it to the mixed doubles final alongside Sreeja Akula. Sreeja, however, lost in her singles semifinal earlier in the day.
The squash mixed doubles duo of Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal was unsuccessful in their semifinal match and will now play for the bronze medal on Sunday.
