CWG-bound boxer Sagar Ahlawat’s preparatory trip to Ireland hit by visa issues | Commonwealth Games 2022 News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: CWG-bound super heavyweight men’s boxer Sagar Ahlawat’s trip to Northern Ireland to prepare for the Birmingham Games has been delayed due to visa issues, TOI has learnt.
Sagar, who was supposed to fly out to Belfast with the rest of the contingent members on Sunday from IGI airport here, is expected to join the team in a couple of days after the processing of his visa, a source informed.
It will be the first time that the 20-year-old from Dhandlan village in Haryana will be donning the India colors and enter the ring at an international event in his promising career.
“It (the delay) could be because Sagar is travelling internationally for the first time, so his visa application is taking time. He is expected to fly out either by tomorrow or Tuesday,” the source added.
In the Commonwealth Games trials, Sagar had defeated his idol Satish Kumar and then beat national champion Narender to book his ticket to Birmingham.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Indian boxing contingent for the CWG left for Jordanstown in Northern Ireland on Sunday for a two-week long multi-national preparatory camp.
The team will leave for Birmingham on July 24. An 11-member women’s squad, including world champion Nikhat Zareen and Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain, and a 15-member men’s team comprising Gold Coast CWG silver medallist Amit Panghal will participate in the camp from July 10-24.
Squad:
Women’s: Nitu (48kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Jaismine Lamboria (60kg), Lovlina Borgohain (70kg)
Men’s: Amit Panghal (51kg), Mohammad Hussamuddin (57kg), Shiva Thapa (63.5kg), Rohit Tokas (67kg), Sumit (75kg), Ashish Kumar (80kg), Sanjeet (92kg) and Sagar Ahlawat (+92kg)
