Dan Evans will be “forever indebted” to his parents Bernadette and David for the journey he has taken. “Yeah, there’s plenty. Listen, I’m now what they did for me. I’m not one to stick it in. Instagram, papers, listen, you know, they’ve done a lot for me,” he said.
“Electricians and nurses don’t earn lot of money and tennis is a hell of a lot of money. And yeah, you know, I’m forever indebted to them and hopefully they can enjoy their life now and look back at it.
“I think that’s important for me is to give back to the people who helped me. And that’s not just my mum and dad by the way it’s everybody that helped me. I try to help them out now and it’s an important thing to me that it’s not just me enjoying being good, it’s everybody around me is on that journey with me to enjoy life.
“It’s not just about me, I think what’s the point in me having a bit of money if nobody else can enjoy us all having fun. They helped me when I was coming up so it’s an important thing to me.
“People will think have different methods to me but that’s a big thing for me is that you know the end of the year I take my friends to Dublin, we all have a good night out, two nights out and you know we enjoy it and that’s important. They were the ones who people were saying; ‘Oh that’s the reason you got banned’ but they’re really the reason why why I’m still going.
Evans was handed a one-year ban after testing positive for cocaine in 2017.
With the Oscar Wilde quote “Every saint has a past and every sinner has a future,” he had gone from the bad boy of British tennis to the sport’s conscience.
“It would have been easier to give up after the drugs ban,” he said. “I thought about it but I was always taught to do your best.
“I know both sides of the coin. Some nights I want to go and have a drink but I know it’s better to get up early and do the training rather than dying in bed the next day.”
