Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune throw shade at Alexander Zverev
Medvedev crashed out of the Monte Carlo Masters on Friday – less than 24 hours after winning a late-night battle against Zverev. The Russian saved two match points as he beat the world No 16 on Thursday evening and Zverev was visibly frustrated, appearing to snub his opponent during the handshake.
The German later slammed Medvedev for running to the toilet during a changeover even though the third seed made it back before the umpire called time. “He is one of the most unfair players in the world. I take fair play and sportsmanship very serious. He does not,” he told Sky Sports Germany.
Despite losing his next match in Monte Carlo, Medvedev appeared to throw shade at Zverev as he pretended to replicate the 25-year-old’s handshake on Rune. The pair then laughed and shook hands properly as the Dane complimented Medvedev’s recent form.
“Oh man, you played so good the last [few] weeks,” the 19-year-old told Medvedev, who reached five successive finals between the Australian Open and Monte Carlo Masters – winning four titles.
But Medvedev wasn’t done with his reference to Zverev as he echoed the former world No 2’s words about himself. “You play unfair,” the 27-year-old quoted as they both laughed.
