Daniil Medvedev using Wimbledon snub as ‘big motivation’ to banish demons
Daniil Medvedev has admitted that he has “big motivation” to go on a deep run at Wimbledon after missing out on last year’s tournament due to the ban on Russian players. Wimbledon has always been the 27-year-old’s least-favorite slam due to the grasscourt as his game is more suited to hard courts.
But he’s managed to match his career-best performance at the British slam after defeating Marton Fucsovics to reach the fourth round. His run comes 12 months after Medvedev and his compatriot were forced to watch Wimbledon from affair as both Russian and Belarusian players were banned from competing.
That ban was lifted for this year’s Championship and Medvedev has hinted that last year’s snub is an extra motivation for him to go on a deep run at Wimbledon. “I really wanna do well here,” Medvedev said.
“I was not playing last year and that’s so far the worst Grand Slam in terms of results for me as first round was my maximum. Even Roland Garros I managed to get into the quarters so I have big motivation to try to change it.
“But the further you go, the tougher the opponents. I just hope I can show my best tennis.” Medvedev has had some big support from the British crowd in his three matches so far, something that he’s been surprised by.
He sensed a change of the tide in his match against Fucsovics as the Centre Court crowd tried to get behind the underdog. But Medvedev admits that he enjoys trying to second guess which way the support is going to go in a match.
“What I love about Wimbledon crowd, I feel like that’s what I see on TV and in my matches,” he said. “They always go for the one who is losing, they always want to see five sets [laughs].
