David Warner eyes swansong Test at SCG, hopes for farewell against Pakistan | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Australian cricket star David Warner has expressed his desire to end his red-ball career with a final Test match at his home ground, the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), against Pakistan in January.
Speaking ahead of Australia’s training session, Warner, who is currently preparing for the upcoming World Test Championship (WTC) final against India, revealed his aspirations for a farewell Test at the SCG.
However, Warner’s recent struggles in the longer format of the game have raised doubts about his place in the Australian Test side. Acknowledging this, the left-handed opener emphasised the need to score runs to secure his spot.
“You’ve got to score runs. I’ve always said the (2024) T20 World Cup would probably be my final game,” Warner stated.

Considering his future plans, Warner added, “I probably owe it to myself and my family – if I can score runs here and continue to play back in Australia – I can definitely say I won’t be playing that West Indies series. If I can get through this (WTC final and ensuing Ashes campaign) and make the Pakistan series, I will definitely finish up then.”
Following the WTC final against India, Australia is scheduled to engage in a five-match Ashes series against England. Warner has been included in Australia’s squad for the WTC final as well as the first two Ashes Tests. However, the selectors have also named Marcus Harris and Matt Renshaw as potential options.
Warner’s recent performance during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in India earlier this year was underwhelming, managing just 26 runs in three Test innings. As the year progresses, Australia will face Pakistan in a three-Test series, with the final match set to be held in Sydney on January 3. Subsequently, they will host the West Indies for a comprehensive series.
