Dead Detectives Society: Acclaimed Horror Authors Unite For New Anthology Book

Some of the biggest names in horror fiction are teaming up for a new anthology book called Dead Detectives Society, and IGN has an exclusive first reveal of the book’s cover art and full creative lineup.

As the name suggests, Dead Detectives Society features a number of stories all built around a similar theme – undead private investigators dealing with paranormal mysteries. Many of the stories featured in the book star characters who have appeared in other comics and prose stories before.

First, check out the cover art and some of the interior illustrations from Dead Detectives Society in the slideshow gallery below:

The full list of stories featured in the book includes:

  • “Mystery Meat: a Dan Shamble, Zombie P.I. Adventure” by Kevin J Anderson
  • “Dead Drop: A Johnny Fade Story” by Nancy Holder and Alan Philipson
  • “The Ghost Thieves” by John Jennings
  • “Jin G. Fox, Death Investigator: Vixen Screams” by Rena Mason
  • “Half A Monster Is Better Than None” by Tim Waggoner
  • “Snippy” by Jeff Strand
  • “The Case of the Ravenous Werewolf” by James Aquilone

Avallone’s Nick Carter story is especially significant, as it features the author reviving the character Nick Carter, who was popularized in the novels of his father, Michael Avallone.

“This anthology gave me a chance to write a character my father rebooted in 1964,” said Avallone in a statement, “and bridge together two pieces of detective genre history that have been begging to be connected ever since…in a short story that should, if I’m successful, remind readers of the particular pulp fiction genius and madness of Michael Angelo Avallone.”

Dead Detectives Society is currently being crowdfunded on Kickstarter. Certain Kickstarter tiers will also include copies of the anthology Monstrous Magazine, which features a mix of prose stories, comics and articles.

In other comic book news, J. Michael Straczynski is returning to Marvel to pen a new volume of Captain America, and we’ve got the full breakdown on the major deaths in The Amazing Spider-Man #26.
