DEHRADUN: Harendra Shah, the former coach of a top cricketer who recently represented India as part of the senior women’s squad, has been booked for sexual harassment, intimidation and use of casteist slurs following a complaint by three girls training at his popular academy in Dehradun. The coaching centre admits budding women cricketers mostly in the 13-18 age group. Charges under the Pocso Act have also been invoked against him.
The charges of molestation and sexual harassment comes after Shah attempted suicide by consuming poison on Friday after an audio clip was leaked by one of his students in which he is purportedly heard seeking sexual favours from her and using expletives. Police have been unable to record his statement as he is “still in no condition to speak”, according to doctors at a city hospital.
Dehradun SSP Daleep Singh Kunwar said, “We are conducting a probe to investigate all the allegations. Strict action would be taken against those involved.”
On Monday night, the father of a 15-year-old cricketer from Shah’s academy lodged a complaint at the Nehru Colony police station saying his daughter was molested on multiple occasions. Following the complaint, Shah was booked under sections 354-A (sexual harassment) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and sections 7 and 8 of the Pocso Act.
