Demon Slayer Movie Makes Solid $10 Million on Opening Weekend, but Fans Are Upset

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – To the Swordsmith Village drew series fans in the United States and Canada to theatres over the weekend, racking in a solid $10 million from its debut in the United States and Canada, according to numbers reported to IGN from Comscore. Despite the showing, however, not everyone walked away thrilled.

The latest Demon Slayer movie only made half of what the last feature film, Mugen Train, made with its $21 million opening weekend in 2021. The premiere put To the Swordsmith Village in fourth place at the box office, showing alongside films like Creed III and Cocaine Bear.

As pointed out by Sportskeeda, Demon Slayer’s new movie debut may make for a more divisive entry to the series, too. Across Twitter and Reddit, some fans raised issue with how much the animated film pulls from the original series. Though some complaints noted they expected a degree of retelling, it seems fans believed the movie would offer more from the next Demon Slayer arc.

While the movie was advertised as a recap of Demon Slayer’s Entertainment District Arc episodes 10 and 11 with new footage from Season 3, complaints seemed focused on how little there was of the next saga. The upcoming third season, featuring the Swordsmith Village arc, only showed off its first episode in Tanjiro’s next adventure, catching heat from fans who called it a “cash grab” and a scam.

Users on IMDB continue to weigh in as well, with reviews highlighting how “more than half” of the film’s runtime is dedicated to the episodes. While a few fans admitted they should’ve researched more of the Demon Slayer movie premise, others pointed out that official descriptions were pretty honest about what To the Swordsmith Village included.

Regardless of mixed reception, To the Swordsmith Village continues the trend of major anime films demonstrating their pull to western theatres. A $10 million debut placed the Demon Slayer flick in the top ten anime opening weekends, landing it just below Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie.
