Devon Conway scores century on debut at Lord’s
Devon Conway has scored an unbeaten century on debut for the Black Caps on day one of the first cricket test against England at Lord’s.
The Wellington batsman has reached 136 not out at stumps, guiding New Zealand to 246 for three after Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bat first.
Conway has shared in an unbroken 132-run partnership with Henry Nicholls, who’s unbeaten on 46.
England went with four fast bowlers on a green wicket but, barring a few unsettling deliveries, Conway saw off the early threat from James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Mark Wood and Ollie Robinson before slowly growing into the game.
Conway’s century came off 163 balls.
Tom Latham was the first to go for 23 with New Zealand 85-1 at lunch.
Captain Kane Williamson (13) and Ross Taylor (14) were dismissed in the second session.
Ollie Robinson has two wickets and James Anderson one.
After winning the toss Williamson said: “There’s always a few things to consider here, looks like a reasonable surface so it’s important we put our plans in place first up.”
“We’ve gone with (spinner Mitchell) Santner and (Colin) de Grandhomme as two all-round options. We know how strong this England side is. It’s about trying to stick to our plans as best we can.”
Lord’s welcomed back spectators for the first time in nearly two years but limited capacity to 25 percent due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
