Disney+ Hotstar Password Sharing: After Netflix, now Disney+ Hotstar to limit ‘password sharing’ in India – Times of India

US-based streaming service Netflix recently started rolling out paid sharing features in India. With this new change, Netflix users will not be able to share their account passwords with their friends. Now it appears that another streaming platform is going to follow the same trend. According to a report by Reuters, Disney+ Hotstar is also planning to bring a new policy to address password sharing for its premium users in India.

According to the report, the company intends to impose a restriction on the number of devices permitted to access a premium account, limiting it to a maximum of four. The primary objective behind this change is to address the issue of password sharing and encourage individual subscriptions.
The streaming platform is currently conducting internal tests of this new enforcement policy, with plans to introduce it later this year. Initially, Disney had adopted a lenient approach to login policies, hoping it would attract more subscribers who would eventually convert to their own individual accounts. However, internal testing disclosed that only about 5% of premium subscribers logged in from more than four devices.

Netflix paid sharing rolled out in India
Netflix has recently taken more stringent actions to combat account and password sharing in India. This effort is part of their global initiative to address this problem and discourage users from sharing their login credentials with individuals outside their household. In India, Netflix is now sending emails to members who are found to be sharing their Netflix accounts with people beyond their household.
A Netflix household refers to a collection of internet-connected devices that are utilised to access Netflix content at the main viewing location. Users can establish a Netflix household through their TV, and any other devices connected to the same internet connection as the TV will be automatically included in their Household.
