Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Spoiler-Free Review: Sam Raimi Gives a Spooky Angle to the MCU and it Pays Off

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness starring Benedict Cumberbatch (Doctor Strange, Elizabeth Olsen (Wanda Maximoff), Rachael McAdams (Christine Palmer), Xochitl Gomez (America Chavez), and Benedict Wong (Wong) is the next big MCU blockbuster that picks up after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home and WandaVision. The movie looks to unravel the mysteries of the multiverse that was introduced for the first time in Marvel TV show, Loki, and also sets a precedent for the upcoming Phase 4 movies. Multiverse of Madness is also the movie where Sam Raimi, the man behind the Tobey Maguire Spider-Man trilogy, is making his MCU directorial debut. So let’s see how this movie fits into the MCU.

Bringing on Sam Raimi, a master of the horror genre, was a brilliant idea. Over the years, he has directed some of the spookiest horror movies ever like ‘The Grudge’, ‘Poltergiest’, ‘The Unholy’ and more. In addition being a horror expert, Raimi has also made movies like ‘Hard Target and ‘The Jungle Book’, so he has some range as well. Furthermore, bringing him on for a movie like Doctor Strange was even better because of the creative freedom he gets with characters like Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange who have a spooky side to them already as seen in the comics.

Personally, Elizabeth Olsen was the highlight of this movie. Her acting, character arc, and her sheer presence on the screen in every scene is ‘spell-binding’. Of course, Benedict Cumberbatch compliments her and so does Xochitl Gomez, but it is The Scarlet Witch that stands out as the MVP of this ensemble.

While one would think that this is just another MCU movie, you’d be surprised with what you actually experience. When you have someone like Sam Raimi as the director, you can bet that he will bring some of his horror experience to the movie, no matter the genre. Jump-scares, hauntingly beautiful visuals, and eerie cinematography adds to the movie’s multiversal setting.

There were instances in the movie where it felt like the scenes were dragging a little bit, but then it quickly changed back to something else and all was good again. However, it did feel like the movie could’ve had a little more content and could’ve been edited to be a longer movie that its current 2h 6m runtime. While the overall pacing of the movie was fine, it still felt a little short to cram so much content in such little time.

The music of the movie takes the cake. Danny Elfman has managed turn an MCU movie into something that could pass for a horror movie. Him and Raimi have worked together on the Spider-Man movies as well and the way Raimi’s direction and Elfman’s music work in perfect sync, it shows that they are the perfect duo for the job.

The story itself will come off as a bit of a surprise to the audiences. I would recommend you brush up on WandaVision or you can just watch Ep 16 and 17 of Marvel Studios LEGENDS on Disney+ Hotstar.

To epitomize, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a terrifyingly fun experience. Despite the fact that the movie could’ve been a little longer and showed us more aspects of the multiverse considering there is a multiversal war coming thanks to Loki and Sylvie, the movie delivers on it promise of having some ‘madness’ to it.
