Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness: The Curious Case of Karl Mordo and His Insignificance in the MCU

Warning: Full spoilers ahead for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is here and the Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen starrer is already a hit amongst the fans. The movie has earned around $185 million on the opening weekend in the US and around $450 million globally.

Sam Raimi definitely leaves his mark on the movie as a horror specialist considering the amount jump-scares and scary visuals it has. It also barely manages to get away with a PG-13 rating because it does not hold back on obliterating characters. Overall, the movie is an interesting addition the the MCU, but there is one character that seems really out of place.

The person in question Karl Mordo, played by Chiwetel Ejiofor, who is a friend and mentor of Doctor Strange. the first Doctor Strange movie that came out in 2016 showed how Mordo chose to leave the Sorcerer Supreme after finding out shew draws power from the Dark Dimension. In the end credits for the same, it is shown that he is now hunting magic users and is an enemy of doctor strange. That was the last time we heard of or saw him in the MCU. Infinity War, Endgame, any of the Spider-Man movies, he was nowhere to be seen, until Multiverse of Madness.

In MoM, he plays Mordo form Earth-838 and is still against the idea of Strange existing but for other reasons. However, upon seeing him again, Stephen Strange also mentions how the Mordo on his earth is still at large and is hunting him for wielding magic. But that’s where the questions arise: Where the heck is he? Is he not considered a threat anymore? Was he turned to dust on the snap and when he came back he died somehow? Or has he changed his ways and is not hunting wizards any more?

There are just too many unanswered questions about the man that lead us to believe he is not an important part of the MCU anymore. It is similar to what happened with Adam Warlock who was teased in GOTG 2 and was never spoken of ever again.

However, there could be a possibility that Mordo comes back considering Clea was just introduced in the MCU. In the comics, she is Doctor Strange’s love interest, eventual wife, and the next Sorceror Supreme.

Nevertheless, there are a few questions that Marvel needs to answer and hopefully we will have answers in the upcoming movies.
