Domestic stalwart Amol Muzumdar is new Mumbai coach | Cricket News – Times of India
MUMBAI: Almost four months after he lost out to his former Mumbai teammate and Ramesh Powar to be the Mumbai coach, Amol Muzumdar replaced the ex-India off-spinner in the ‘hot seat’ when the domestic stalwart was on Tuesday named as the new head coach of the Mumbai senior team for the 2021-22 season.
The decision was taken by the MCA’s Cricket Improvement Committee (CIC) which is headed by former India batsman and national selector Jatin Paranjape, and includes ex-India players Vinod Kambli and Nilesh Kulkarni.
Muzumdar pipped his former Mumbai teammate and ex-India opener Wasim Jaffer, former India leg-spinner Sairaj Bahutule, India’s 1983 World Cup hero Balwinder Singh Sandhu and ex-Mumbai wicketkeeper Sulakshan Kulkarni, besides five other applicants who were interviewed by the CIC last week.
Once Powar quit the post after leading Mumbai to the Vijay Hazare Trophy triumph, Muzumdar was a front-runner to bag the job. A former Mumbai Ranji-winning captain, Muzumdar scored a record 11,167 runs in 171 first-class games @48.13, with 30 hundreds and 60 fifties to boot.
Post retirement, he was a batting coach with the NCA, the Rajasthan Royals and the visiting South African team to India in 2019, besides being a TV commentator in domestic cricket.
